International Women's Day is celebrated on the 8th of March. It is a day set aside to remind us to appreciate the women in our lives. The event also has historical significance around the world with a rich back story.
The first National Woman's Day was observed in the United States on 28 February. The day was designated in honor of the 1908 garment workers' strike in New York, where women protested against working conditions.
In 1917 against the back drop of World War I Russian women protested and took to the streets with demands for "Bread and Peace" This took place on the last Sunday in February which according to the Gregorian calendar was March 8th. Four days later, the Czar abdicated and the provisional Government granted women the right to vote.
Since those early years, International Women's Day has assumed a new global dimension. It is set aside to appreciate the economic, political & social achievements of women all over the world.
It has become a custom around the world for men to give flowers to the women in their lives on Women’s Day. In Italy, giving mimosa flowers is the tradition. The mimosa flower is a yellow bush that blossoms in early March with a delicate and fresh perfume. This beautiful flower blossoms prior to any other in the very first days of March and heralds the coming of spring. Yellow mimosas are also the traditional International Women’s Day gift in Russia and other European countries.
