Constance Spry, the renowned British floral designer in the 1920’s broke the constraints of floral designs that used restrictive rules and were tightly structured. She brought out the “free spirit” in her students of floral design, with her use of unconventional containers filled with garden flowers and foraged organic garden materials. She used ferns, grasses, foliage and berries to create a tapestry of texture.
The appeal of this loose and airy garden style with rich texture is now the request of many a bride. Wedding and dinner parties frequently use long rectangular king size tables with multiple arrangements of garden flowers such as roses, hydrangea, callas, and Queen Anne’s lace, woven in with berries, cascading ferns and other trailing greenery. Decorated with candles and candelabra the table setting is evocative of a lush and lavish dinner scene from Downton Abbey.
The hit series set in the 1920’s continues to be a favorite with our clients and as a nod to the series and their love of all things vintage we created a line of Downton Abbey chic designs for Valentine’s Day.
